As the snowstorm approaches and in-person worship is cancelled, I have created an online “Morning Meditation” that will be available on Sunday. I have selected lessons that I thought would work the snowstorm into the meditation. That noted, I could not resist using Psalm 147:12-18. This portion of the psalm feels almost tailor-made for such a moment. It reminds us that snow and ice are not interruptions to God’s work but instruments of it. The psalmist sees winter not as a threat but as a teacher.
Psalm 147 sings of a God who is both cosmic and close. It praises the One who “strengthens the bars of your gates,” who “fills you with the finest wheat,” and who “scatters the frost like ashes” and “hurls down hail like crumbs.” I love these words because the psalmist is not afraid to name winter weather as part of God’s own vocabulary.
Looking forward to being with you online this Sunday.
Stay safe, stay warm.
Blessings, Fr. Karl
