The window on the north side of our church depicts the Transfiguration. At the center stands Jesus on the mountaintop, radiant in glory. Moses is below him, holding the Tablets of the Law; along with Elijah who stands with a scroll, representing the prophets. At the apex of the window hovers the Spirit Dove, and below, almost overwhelmed by the brilliance above them, are Peter, James, and John. The words woven into the glass proclaim, “This is my beloved Son, hear Him.”

On Sunday, we will hear Matthew’s telling of this moment. His account leans deeply into the Exodus imagery: Jesus’ face “shone like the sun,” and Peter instinctively wants to build tents—the same kind of shelters the Israelites used in the wilderness.

This Sunday also marks the close of the Epiphany season. Our final hymn includes a small ‘Alleluia Chorus” at the end of each stanza, a last bright note before we set the word aside for Lent. The next time we will sing it will be on Easter morning.

They are predicting rain, which means we will have warmer temperatures when we gather for worship.
